Live Jam Recording

Here‘s the live jam I did at Soundpond in Adelaide a while ago. I arrived really late and completely unprepaired, but I think it turned out alright anyway. I used three songs as the base (Ponky Super Dub Edit, Linkan, Oso) and re-arranged them live and programmed new bits on the fly.

I borrowed Tim Koch‘s SX-64 and his effect pedal so I had a nice setup to play with. Sorry for shocking the drum n’ bass heads listening to Soundpond before I got on hehe.


Dataslav Recording from ANTI-HUMANISM

A while ago I made an improvised live-set where people could tell me what to do, by filling in a form. It’s like the live-performed version of the more asynchronous previous Dataslav performance. And more abstract. Or concrete, maybe?

I made two 30-minute sets and the second one was documented by Jacob Remin, so here it is for you (wav). The forms below are time-stamped, so you can sort of follow how they influenced the music. If you understand Danish, that is. Which everyone does.


Short Clip of the FARM-performance

The last 2 minutes of my live improvisation at the party at 3:e Våningen after the FARM-workshop. It was all about live coding, and there were some pretty amazing performances there. Alex McLean and his algorave did not disappoint, for example.

I actually co-organized this event with Palle Dahlstedt and really happy about how it turned out. Live coding is pretty much next level human-computer music to me.


Video of Live Composing at Friktion

Video of me live-composing music on the C64 at Atalante, Göteborg. It’s about 30 minutes, starting of quite ambientish and then some broken funk with a pinch of gabber at the top. The Friktion event focused on making music live from scratch, and showing the tools. Live coding in a way, but not using text editors.

Live Coding in Gothenburg, 8 April

Friktion features live programmed music by me, Simon Mattisson and Niklas Sjösvärd (also known to chip-people as Sm0hm and Zabutom respectively). The venue is Atalante.

I will start the C-64 and jam from scratch, like I’ve done a couple of times lately. I use the defMON-tracker, so I expect live coding purists will throw rotten kiwis at me.


L0v3 byt3s

L0v3 byt3s (NSFW) is a PETSCII-conversion of the old xxx-movie Love Bites. We made it as an impersonation of Vuk Cosic, famous for his ASCII-conversions of Deep Throat among other things. L0ve byt3s was made for Daniel Temkin’s exhibition Netvvorth, December 2013.

I made the music together with Zabutom and Linde, Johan Kotlinski coded it and Raquel Meyers did everything else.

The music is basically several long jams, pretty much unedited. The first one is me on defMON and Zabutom on some sort of modular synth monster. We recorded it in the Academy of Music and Drama in Göteborg – the perfect place for pr0n-music!

Somewhere in the middle this FM/ST-01 jam starts with Linde, and then more defMON and so on.

Video of the Textmode A/V Jam

The video of the performance yesterday, made with two C64s. I make music from scratch (no sounds or sequences prepaired) and add effects with a delay pedal. The music software is shown on the screen, and Raquel Meyers mixes it together with her typed visuals. Everything is in PETSCII. Thanks to Geraldine Juárez for filming. Dataslöjd power!

The music basically goes from ambient to acid and broken beats (?) to noise. As in any jam, some parts are pretty bad but in general I’m quite satisfied.

The performance was part of Simultáneo in Mexico.

How to make C64 music

I recorded myself making some beats from scratch on the C64. Acid funk skweee something? Nothing fancy, but gives you a peek into how it works. Or not. But just copy all my moves and then you have a C64-song!

Obviously there’s lots of boring parts, because this wasn’t supposed to be a live jam like 2SLEEP1 or sth. Skip and be happy.

The Ferret Show: A Musical With Uwe Schenk Band

This is a 20-minute musical performed by me, 4 musicians and Raquel Meyers. Uwe Schenk rearranged my songs for bass, saxophone, harpsichord (spinet) and drums. Raquel animated the story with text graphics, and sequenced it live.

Most of the songs are tightly arranged, but others are quite improvised. I used a tracker to change some songs on the fly, and also played the C64 as a piano using Cynthcart. Quite a challenge to be as pro as the Uwe Schenk Band!

The videos are available in better quality at Uwe Schenks website. The original songs are either unreleased, from here or Cherry CD or perhaps lurking around on internet2008.

Fax Performance Recording

Last year I made a fax performance, where we had a phone line open for incoming faxes, and another one for internal PETSCII faxing. There is now a Tumblr that shows one of these faxes every day.

As for the music, I turned pre-made songs into droney jams, and I drowned it in Ableton delays. It was filmed by TVMarineret, who did some pretty hardcore editing of the material. The first part is here and contains more accordion and clownery.
